IDENTITY DESTRUCTION – New Character Design
John Couchi (Identity Destruction) got in touch to design and develop a fourth mascot character for his company. The core object was a re-cycle bin. As we are both big Star Wars fans I suggested to use similar legs to R2D2 which he liked a lot. I used the same arms in keeping with the other characters. I used photo refs for the bin to model this. Initially he had a grill face but John thought it looked too scary so we flattened the mouth piece and stuck the recycle logo on there which works well as it is triangular.
I wanted this character to have a different feel, more worn and grungy. To achieve this I used Corona Renderer’s ‘curvature shader’ which gives edges and corners a used look. I did not want it to be too in your face but subtle. I layered various displacement maps to get the scratches. I also had to build and organise the character with pivot point for animation later down the line. All done in 4 days and John Couchi was super happy with the end renders.
